Breitling history

In 1884, Breitling was founded by Léon Breitling in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. However, it’s based in Grenchen, Switzerland. It’s famous for its precision-made chronometers designed particularly for aviators. In 1979, the company was sold to Ernst Schneider and till 2017, the Schneider family operated Breitling, when Theodore Schneider, Ernst’s son, sold 80% of the company (the majority stake) for over $870m to CVC Capital Partners and 20% of the company is still operated by the Schneider family. Through the years, Breitling didn’t produce movements in-house but sourced movements from suppliers such as ETA, Valjoux, and Venus. In 2009, Breitling started using movements completely designed and manufactured by this Swiss watchmaker in its own workshops.

Breitling is famous for its sophisticated, resilient, luxurious watches, proving their quality more than their practical aviation functions. Breitling’s watches undergo tests for chronometer certification, marketing watches towards either aviation (Navitimer) or diving (SuperOcean). Breitling’s watches are characterized by its large watch faces to ensure reliable readability, as well as polished cases and bracelets, symbolizing elegance and expertise.
